Fragments of Aeterna
Creation of the Lavamancers:
Aeterna was once a planet known as Glacialis. The planet was already very old when the human race began its early stages of civilization. The planet was so old that by the time they had reached the Bronze Age the planets magma core began to cool. The winters began getting colder and colder as the centuries passed, and in many parts of the planet people actually lived underground during the winter months, surviving off of preserved foods and cured meats. It was not until the Age of Technology that the humans were able to develop a way of seeing why the planet was cooling. It was discovered that the molten core of Glacialis would cool until the planet became a frozen wasteland and everything on it died. After much deliberation a solution was decided on. 10 of the greatest mages of the world were gathered at the Royal Arcane College, the forefront in arcane education and research. Together with scientists who had been studying the inner core of the planet, the Royal Arcane College prepared the 10 mages for the incredible sacrifice they were about to make for their planet. The 10 mages traveled to the south pole of the planet, armed with arcane knowledge over controlling and moving magma. The mages arrived at their destination at the south pole and there they began their work. 9 of the mages formed a circle around the other mage, the Archmage. Each one of themselves rooted themselves to the ground, allowing the earth around them to envelope them, becoming one with the earth. They relinquished their consciousness, liberating themselves from the limitations of mortal emotions and thoughts. The 9 mages of the circle acted as locus’ of energy, and pumped pure arcane energy into the earth, heating the magma core. The Archmage controlled the flow of the magma, and thus the tectonic plates they held up. The mages lost their mortality and became the Eternal Lavamancers, who have since kept the planet warm and running for hundreds of years. Steadily over the next few centuries the climate warmed up and the planet became a much more livable place. The human race rejoiced and dubbed their planet Terrae Aeternus, the Eternal Earth, since the planets core would never die out, and the planet as whole should survive as long as the system’s star goes out.
The mages relinquished conscious thought and emotion in order to achieve the level of focus required to complete their task. Because of this, the Archmage will not go out of his way to prevent disastrous tectonic activity. An early warning system has been put in place. The Royal Archane College picks their best and brightest students that are gifted with psionic powers to take up the role of the Oracle. The Oracle is able to tap into the mind of the lavamancers. The lavamancers’ minds being one with the planet are able to “see” the position and movement of tectonic plates. Reading the minds of the mages allows the Oracle to predict tectonic activity long before other early warning systems that are based in technology.
The long term survival of the planet relies on the survival and protection of the Circle of Lavamancers. An enormous domed building was constructed around the Circle, having only one entrance. That entrance is guarded by four Iron Golems immediately out in front. Buried in shallow grave of snow and permafrost lies the army of 100 Warforged Samurai, created by the greatest artificers in the Oriias lowlands. Each samurai was imbued with the power to assimilate its fallen brothers into its being, growing in size and power. So really, there is not a force of 100 samurais. There is an equivalent force of 4950 samurais (the first one to die will reassimilate 99 times, the second will reassimilalate 98 times etc.). It is said that the final samurai, after assimilating all 99 of its brothers, would be bigger and stronger than a Storm Giant, but retain the swiftness and grace of the original samurais. As a last line of defense, the Oracle is a trained combat mage and has learned how to tap into the power of the Lavamancers, and is able to unleash a torrent of fire and lava on her opponents.
